SHELL - two opposing sides of orthogonal part not removed

Bug reportFixed
Dave G.edited

Two opposing flat sides of a cylindrical part not removed accurately. One side removed, the opposing flat side could not be removed. The flat sides had thru-holes cut in the solid cylinder prior to the shell.

Running 0.8.2

UPDATE png pics -
Shell 2 - part with no shell
Shell 3 - part with 0.25mm wall thickness - correct geometry
Shell 4 - 0.5mm wall thickness - corrupt shell
Shell 5 - 1mm wall thickness - corrupt shell in a different way

Updated to 0.9.3 - same issues exist

Hey Dave. I'm unable to recreate this issue. Let me know if the below images are what you're describing, or if it's something a bit different.

Hi Tyler – keep in mind that the part that I loaded is not true geometry since the edge of the hole on the flat surface of a cylinder is actually tangent with the outside cylinder itself, so that tangent point has zero thickness. The part that you show will work, but I would like to try putting a hole at the flat surface where there is a line discontinuity into another surface that is slightly angled from that surface, and the tangent is right at that line. I will upload that file if it is a problem, or comment that the software can handle that fine.

Tyler - keeping this same post - regarding a shell. I put two chamfers (cuts) on one of the flat surfaces, and shelled the part where the tangent of the inside curved surface is tangent to the bevel edge. The shell includes the chamfer surfaces indicated in blue. These should not be there. Uploaded a PNG screenshot and the actual part Test2.

Let me know if you want to keep these posts without the actual part files.

I see that I cannot send the part file here..... sent it via email - Test 2

Got it, I am looking into it now, looks like that proptrusion on each end of the chamfer should instead be a single edge. I'll try to fix it. The shell logic can be very complex, I've struggled a lot refining it, so we'll see where I get with it.

The second issue is fixed as of 0.8.2. I'm still unsure on the first issue description. Let me know if it is still present after the latest release, and if so, provide a screenshot or two so I can understand better whats going on.

This is now fixed as of 0.9.5, pushed on 10-26.

Now, walls that overlap now merge into a solid web, so thicknesses like 0.75, 1.2 or 2.0 build on this part. The same goes for holes, pockets, slots, ribs and bosses, shelling inward or outward. Only a thickness where walls would exactly touch is refused, and the shell now tells you which surfaces are in the way
